i am constantly exploring the little secrets of oil paint. it creates miniature relationships with everything and anything it comes in contact with and to me that's fascinating. i love to see the way the paint interacts with texture and how itself creates texture. i experiment with almost any material that i can get my hands on because i'm in love with texture; keeping in mind the general hierarchy that oil paint itself demands. paint is the king, and everything else pays tribute to the paint.

my paintings are extremely physical. i paint them on the floor, in 360 degrees, constantly moving around them, lifting them, tilting them until i get the right movement on the canvas or wood. when the paintings get more developed, each stage of movement is more difficult because they become heavier, especially the really large pieces. i believe that the success of the visual and emotional elements of each piece greatly rely on this physicality.

i can never re-create some of those little discoveries and happy accidents in paintings which sometimes bothers me, especially when I really love a section of a painting. though at the same time its rather humbling to realize things will never be the same and you are not ultimately in control. sometimes these relationships in the painting can be disastrous, but they are beautiful. and if your're lucky, even life changing.

artist bio & resume

current projects:

-artist inspired and designed for function, urban boutique shoe designers Shane & Shawn in Soho are collaborating with Alessandra to create a one of a kind line of womens and mens shoes for spring of 2009. The artist will create two large paintings that will be used as textiles and sent to a factory where they will take the paintings and literally create shoes out of the artwork. This brings the creation of art back into the boardroom, as is Shane & Shawn's business philosophy. Shane & Shawn have been featured in dozens of magazines including People, Oprah, Mens Health & Style.

artist bio:

right on the brink of graduating from art school, alessandra delacruz is a brooklyn based emerging painter who knew she was in fine arts for the long haul when her frustration with technology quickly ended her 2 week stint as a communications design major in 2005. after selling her first painting after her second year at college, alessandra was inspired that there was an interest in her work. she then decided to start trekking her 7 feet long paintings with her and her friends to union square to gain some more public attention. since then she has completed private commissions, shown at M55 and 2/20 Gallery, and held a solo exhibition at a williamsburg restaurant in the summer of 2008.

after a narrative painting phase in 2006-07, alessandra discovered texture and never looked back, moving onto a more intense color palette and exploring more interesting woven surfaces that conveyed a similarly heavy message like her other pieces without being figurative. now without the confines of an educational institution, alessandra paints in her back yard in bushwick, brooklyn, and hopes on a daily basis it doesn't rain when her pieces are left outside.

her paintings are extremely physical, by painting them on the floor in 360 degrees, constantly moving around them; lifting them, tilting them until the get the right movement of paint and texture on the canvas or wood is achieved. when the paintings get more developed, each stage of movement is more difficult because they become heavier, especially the really large pieces. both the demise and the success of the visual and emotional elements of each painting relies greatly on this physicality.

she is continuing on that note, experimenting with new mediums, mixing things together that shouldn't be mixed, and whole heartedly trying to express the beauty behind oil paint by allowing the paint to feel and move across the surface interacting with each bump of texture purely and abstractly.
